Shilling Joins Local Leaders on Broadband Roundtable

VIROQUA, WI (Ben Caxton) — Senate Leader, Democrat Jennifer Shilling, Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection Secretary Brad Pfaff and Public Service Commission Chair Rebecca Valcq joined local leaders for a roundtable discussion on the importance of broadband at Vernon Communications. The discussion highlighted Governor Evers’ budget proposal which proposes investments in high-speed broadband infrastructure and reduces regulations that make it difficult for municipalities to directly invest in broadband infrastructure. Shilling believes high-speed broadband is a critical component of economic growth for many family farms and small businesses in the Driftless Region adding that Investing in rural broadband projects can help close the digital divide, create new jobs, and open up small communities to an abundance of new opportunities. The discussion also focused on the importance of broadband connectivity for public safety as well as the need for accurate mapping of access and creative public-private partnerships for funding and grant applications.
