First Conviction from Rape Test Kit Backlog

WAUPACA COUNTY, WI (Ben Caxton) — Attorney General Josh Kaul has announced the first conviction stemming from previously untested sexual assault kits. `A jury in Waupaca County convicted Leroy Whittenberger of three counts of Second Degree Sexual Assault, for the assault of a teenage victim in July 2012. Whittenberger is a serial sexual offender with three prior convictions from Lincoln and Marathon counties. A DOJ press release said law enforcement and advocacy service providers from those counties were instrumental in bringing about these new convictions. A sentencing date for Whiitenberger has not yet been scheduled.`
