High Speed Chase Ends in Drug Arrest Along River

EASTMAN, WI (Ben Caxton) — The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department says a high-speed chase on Wednesday that ended up on a dead-end on a back road alongside the Mississippi River sent two men to jail on drug charges. The chase began when deputies spotted a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu speeding southbound on Highway 35 in the Township of Eastman. The Malibu turned down a steep driveway onto private property along the Mississippi River to try and get away from the officer who had turned around to stop the car. The chase continued for several hundred yards along the river on a dirt road, before the Malibu came to the end of the road and came to a stop. A search of the car at the scene found marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and open alcohol containers. The driver, 27-year-old Alexander Berg of West Union, Iowa, who is on parole from the State of Iowa, and a passenger in the vehicle, 34-year-old Benjamin Campbell, also of West Union were taken into custody. Berg displayed indicators of alcohol and drug impairment and had to be transported to a hospital for treatment before being taken to jail. A search of the car found marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and open alcohol containers.
