Woman Claims Fault for Accident to Protect Driver

CRAWFORD COUNTY, WI (Ben Caxton) — 58-year-old Catherine Stevenson was arrested by Crawford County deputies Sunday after telling she was responsible for a one-vehicle crash on October 5th to protect the actual driver. Stevenson told authorities she was forced off the road by another vehicle causing her to crash on State Highway 131 near County Highway X adding that the other left the scene of the accident. Stevenson also claimed that her 20-year-old daughter Cheyenne Stevenson was the sole passenger. An investigation by deputies however determined that the vehicle was actually being driven by 22-year-old Charles Towsley of Lone Rock at the time of the accident and that both Stevenson’s had lied to officers to help out Towsley. Towsley was later found at the Stevenson residence hiding in the basement. Towsley was arrested and charged with first-offense OWI, operating after revocation, and resisting arrest and he was placed on a Felony Probation Hold. Both Cheyenne and Catherine Stevenson were placed under arrest for resisting and obstructing an officer for her part in assisting Towsley in avoiding apprehension and issued a citation for falsifying an accident report.
