Flooding Returns to Mississippi River Shores

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, WI (Ben Caxton) — The Mississippi River crested yet again above flood stage in the Prairie du Chien area over the weekend. Gauges in McGregor showed Old Muddy at 16.77 feet on Saturday, just slightly above flood stage of 16 feet. Still that has been high enough to close some roads in the city. Anticipating the flood Prairie du Chien began pumping water some time ago. City Administrator Chad Abram said that as early as last Wednesday water was flowing over the Lawler Park Wall and a part of North Main Street was closed. By Thursday water began covering Washington Street. Access to the island via Washington Street was closed on Friday and will remain until further notice. Also all boat launches in Prairie du Chien are being affected by the high water. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also temporarily closed Blackhawk Park near De Soto on last week along with Bad Axe and Jay’s landings in Wisconsin, and Millstone Landing in Minnesota.
