Lancaster Mayor Vetoes Storm Sewer Rate Hike

LANCASTER, WI (Ben Caxton) — Lancaster Mayor Dave Varnam this week vetoed a proposed increase in storm sewer utility rates for next year that was approved October 21st by the Lancaster Common Council. Varnam announced his veto the next day saying the more than 40% increase had the potential to be a burden to residents and businesses adding that both the Lancaster Community School District and the Grant County Fairgrounds would each be facing $150 a month in additional fees if the rate increase were left in place. Varnam also says he believes the public should have been provided more time to review the proposed rate increase noting that in the past the city always provided at least a month for public comment on proposed utility rate increases.
