LANCASTER, WI (Ben Caxton) — Grant County Sheriff Nate Dreckman says he wants to import more criminals into the county. The sheriff’s department is expected to start looking for inmates from other areas to house for money at the new Grant County jail. The 45 inmates currently in custody were moved to the new facility last month. But where the old jail had just 68 beds, the new facility has 106, although state rules generally require at least 15% of that capacity remain open for temporary increases in prisoner counts. But those empty beds equal money. The county hopes to be able to sell the space for as much as a quarter of a million dollars annually and Sheriff Nate Dreckman promises the county will be “aggressive” in finding inmates to house from other facilities, including some from the Wisconsin prison system.
