Car Stuck in Semi Grille Closes Highway 18

BRIDGEPORT, WI (Ben Caxton) — A Thursday traffic accident saw a Volkswagon car get stuck in the brush-guard of an 18-wheeler, stalling traffic near Bridgeport for a time. The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department reports the accident occurred just before 7:00 PM on Us Highway 18 in Bridgeport Township when the semi struck a car and the northbound lane of traffic was blocked. 53-year-old Scott Winkers of Woodman was traveling northbound on the highway in the left turn lane operating a 2016 Western Star Semi. 70-year-old Ed Block of Prairie du Chien was also headed north in the right lane in a 2017 Volkswagen Golf. The semi attempted to change lanes and go into the right lane and struck Block with the rear drivers tire which caused the Volkswagen to turn in front of the semi. Block’s car then became stuck in front of the semi on its brush guard breaking out the driver side window. Block was able to exit the car through the passenger door. Block reported minor injuries and later transported himself to the hospital for evaluation. The northbound lane of traffic was closed for approximately 20 minutes. Winkers was cited for unsafe lane deviation. Assisting on scene was Prairie du Chien Police Department and Tri-State EMS.
