Health Order Postpones Crawford Campground Openings

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, WI (Ben Caxton) — All local campground and campground owners have been ordered to postpone opening this year under a health order issued Monday by Crawford County Health Officer, Cindy Riniker. Riniker says that under state law she is empowered to “promptly take all measures necessary to prevent, suppress, and control communicable diseases … I am authorized, under state law to do what is reasonable and necessary for the prevention and suppression of disease, including forbidding public gatherings when deemed necessary to control outbreaks of epidemics.” Riniker cited the following reasons for her action against campgrounds: They draws people from outside of the county to be in the county increasing population, encourage what she calls “non-essential” travel, Increase shopping at local stores in the county for supplies and groceries, allow for congregating of groups greater than ten people, and reduces the ability to properly social distance, especially in communal locations, like bathrooms. The Health Order will remain in effect until Crawford County Emergency Order is ended and as long as the Wisconsin Governor’s Safer at Home order is in effect.
