Vernon County Sheriff John Spears reports a 41-year-old man from Genoa was arrested on Thursday after a two vehicle head on accident that occurred on Thursday night at approximately 11:15 p.m.

The sheriff’s office says 41-year-old Benjamin A. Smith of rural Genoa was driving south on State Hwy 35 when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck the northbound vehicle operated by Paul A. Johnson, 50, of rural DeSoto. Smith’s vehicle continued down the highway and eventually overturned in the northbound ditch.

Johnson was transported by Tri-State Ambulance to Franciscan Skemp-Mayo in La Crosse for precautionary reasons. Smith had a laceration to his head and refused medical treatment on scene. Smith was later arrested for Operating While Intoxicated, first offense.

Assisting at the scene were the Genoa-Harmony First Responders, Genoa-Harmony Fire Department, and the Tri-State Ambulance Service.

The accident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
