Sheriff John B. Spears reports a vehicle versus train accident that occurred Thursday evening  at approximately 10:38 p.m. on State Hwy 35 near Mundsack Road in the Town of Genoa.

Danyel R. Smith, 33, of Stoddard, was traveling southbound on State Hwy 35 North of  Mundsack Road when she lost control of her vehicle, went off the road, overturned and came to rest on the railroad tracks. A northbound Burlington Northern train struck the vehicle. Smith was transported to Gundersen Lutheran Hospital by Tri-State Ambulance.

The Conductor and Engineer in the Burlington Northern Train were not injured. Alcohol was a factor in the crash. Smith was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Assisting at the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were the Genoa First Responders, Genoa Fire Department, and Tri-State Ambulance.

The accident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
